Abstract

La obra de Arango consiste en presentar una concepción global del desarrollo cafetero colombiano y su relación con el proceso de ascenso del capitalismo moderno en Colombia. Plantea tres hipótesis fundamentales sobre el desarrollo histórico del occidente colombiano entre 1850-1930. Primera afianzamiento de la producción campesina estuvo íntimamente ligado a la formación de una fuerza de trabajo desposeída de medios de producción. Segunda el efecto fundamental de la economía parcelaria de occidente no fue el de redistribuir el ingreso, si no más bien el de concentrarlo en manos de los comerciantes de café. Tercera el surgimiento de la industria en occidente y su relativo rezago en oriente fue el producto de una serie de relaciones sociales que tendieron a acelerar la formación del capitalismo en occidente y retrasarlo en el oriente del país. Es indudable que la obra no se limita a analizar las tres hipótesis, pero vale la pena estudiar la forma como el autor las investigó, parad luego adentrar en otros aspectos de la obra.
