Eastern Germany today: much has been achieved, much remains to be done

Abstract

Joachim Ragnitz, Ifo Dresden, draws an economic balance after 20 post-Berlin-Wall years and proposes a ten-point plan for the new federal states. In his opinion the federal government should extend its commitment to the new federal states beyond the obligations in the Solidarity Pact II. Only with an additional policy effort will it be possible to achieve convergence by 2020 at least to the level of the financially weak western German federal states.
