France: Reprise Conjoncturelle sans Cohabitation

Abstract

The French economy has overcome the economic downswing with less loss than many other West European countries. Real gross domestic product expanded by 1.8% in 2001. The unemployment rate declined to 8.6% on average for the year. The rate of inflation reached 1.8%. In 2002 real GDP is likely to increase by 1¼%. The state of the labour market will deteriorate. The unemployment rate will rise to more than 9% on average. Consumer prices are expected to exceed the year earlier level by 1¾%. In 2003, GDP will rise by 2¾%. The unemployment rate will remain at just below 9% and the price level will rise by 1½% over 2002.
