Only moderate growth for the building industry in this decade

Abstract

According to the first all-German construction forecast for the next ten years made by the Ifo Institute, construction demand will provide no basis for euphoria, because average real growth will not even amount to 1% per annum. Already in 2003, however, real construction volume will expand by 1½% to 2%, after reaching a low this year. In residential construction, housing completions will begin to increase next year and reach approximately 400 000 units in 2006. After that housing completions will decline again slightly. In non-residential construction, demand in commercial building will be more favourable than in public construction.
