Abstract

In January 2001, the Ifo Institute again asked the east German participants of the Ifo Business Survey to report on their production and personnel plans for the year. After respectable growth figures in the past year - production and order reserves recorded double-digit growth - east German firms still displayed a confident mood. They also anticipate a 12% production increase for this year. Manufacturers of capital goods are again expected to expand production at an increased rate. Assessments of the profit situation have also improved, with favourable appraisals outweighing unfavourable ones for the first time. Especially in the consumer goods industry, a significant improvement in profits has been reported, with negative reports concentrated on only a few industries such as non-metallic minerals and steel and light metal construction. Although employment in east German manufacturing expanded last year by 3%, in 2001 this increase will again slacken with an increase of 1½% expected.
