World Economic Growth Remains Robust

Abstract

More than 650 experts in 80 countries participated in the 68th Economic Survey International (ESI) of the Ifo Institute. Although no further improvement in the world economic climate was registered since the January survey, at 6.55 points the high level of the beginning of the year was maintained. Whereas the current situation was assessed even more favourably than in January, the expectations are no longer quite so optimistic. The U.S. participants continue to see no signs of a weakening economic situation in the foreseeable future. The likelihood that Europe will gradually match U.S. growth and productivity rates has improved. The Bank of Japan's recent Tankan Report indicated a gradual recovery of the Japanese economy, a view that was supported by the surveyed experts. The ESI survey participants, with the exception of the Japanese experts, expect the central banks to tighten monetary policy in the next half year. As long as the U.S. economy continues to be so much stronger than the European economy, the experts see a continuing vulnerability for the euro.
