Abstract

Der wirtschaftliche Aufschwung setzt sich in Israel nach schwierigen achtziger Jahren seitdem unvermindert fort. Nahezu 600 000 Einwanderer seit 1990 ließen die Bevölkerung des kleinen Landes auf fast 5,5 Mill. ansteigen (darunter 1 Mill. Palästinenser), und was eigentlich eine Belastung hätte sein müssen, wurde zum Wachstumsmotor. Mit 6,8 % real lag das Wirtschaftswachstum 1994 doppelt so hoch wie im Vorjahr, das Bruttoinlandsprodukt (zu lfd. Preisen) erreichte 1994 74 Mrd. $, das Pro-Kopf-Einkommen stieg auf mehr als 13 500 $. Die Arbeitslosenquote - 1992 noch bei 11,2 % - fiel auf 7,8 % und halbierte sich, nur auf die Immigranten (95 % aus Osteuropa und den ehemaligen Sowjetrepubliken) bezogen, auf 15 %. Ein Wermutstropfen ist die unerwartete hohe Inflationsrate von 14,5 % in 1994, die man in diesem Jahr - bei einem BIP-Wachstum von etwa 5 % - auf 10 bis 12 % zu drücken hofft. Den Außenhandel kennzeichnet ein nach wie vor hoher Importüberschuß (Exporte von 16,9 Mrd. $ standen 1994 einer Einfuhr von 23,5 Mrd. $ gegenüber), und das Leistungsbilanzdefizit schnellte 1994 auf 3 Mrd. $ hoch.
