Abstract

The statistics assembled between 2000 and 2002 indicate that the companies operating in the Romanian manufacturing industry assigned a small percentage of their innovation costs to the research-development activity, which proves the managers' lack of interes in this field, but they focused their attention on acquiring equipment and devices. The companies which resorted to innovating techniques have noticed the positive effect on technological products and operations. This step forward consists in widening the range of goods and services , expanding the sales market or increasing the output capacity. The companies have also noticed the economic and local factors blocking the innovating process. Some of these factors are: high innovation costs, the lack of information regarding technology or the lack of qualified staff. The manufacturing industry at both European and world level is dominated by the products of medium and high technology, while the Romanian firms are only at the beginning of the industrial innovating process.
