Abstract

This article investigates the relationship between religion, culture and economic performance, with a particular emphasis on the alleged impact of Islam. Dominant religious affiliations in some countries and areas of the world seem to be related to performance. Analyses were conducted on samples of 50 and 78 countries at the cross-national level and on data from India, Malaysia, and Ghana at the subnational level. Results do not support the claim that Islam is inimical to growth. They show that Islam does not appear to be a drag on growth; if anything, Islam promotes growth.
