Abstract

Our aim is to study the various uses of economic barometers in Europe and in the United-States between 1919 and 1932. First, we explain the way Persons constructed the famous Harvard barometer [1919-1930] which was exclusively used for forecasting. Finally, we suggest that the work achieved in European conjuncture institutes relied on Persons? works. Yet, they attributed a more important role to theory: economic barometers were seen as a support of business cycles theories, as the work of Wagemann suggests [1925-1932].
