Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explore the socio-demographic transformations of rural areas in the urban fields of influence in Quebec, as well as their implications for the governance of these territories. The situation in Quebec is placed in the North American context. A conceptual framework is presented that underscores the heterogeneity of these rural territories, both in terms of their basic economic activities and their socio-demographic transformations. The values of the different population segments of these rural territories are not simple because there is no linear relationship between values and socio-demographic segments. It is in this context of heterogeneity that the issue of governance of these territories is broached, focussing on rural and agricultural spaces in these territories and their multi-functionality as a tool that can contribute to a reduction in the ?incompatibilities? between the different segments of interest.
