Abstract

La 4 aprilie 1884, Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu, singurul specialist în lingvistică dintre membrii Academiei Române, se angaja în faţa înaltului for academic să elaboreze dicţionarul etimologic, subvenţionat de către regele Carol I. Răspunsurile primite la „Chestionarul lingvistic”, chestionar conceput de el şi transmis în toate spaţiile locuite de români, au constituit preţioase surse de informare pentru redactarea celor trei tomuri ale dicţionarului. După 1888, anul morţii fiicei sale, epuizat de suferinţa psihică, B.P.Hasdeu încetinea ritmul de lucru la dicţionar. Alte preocupări şi alte orizonturi îl chemau... În 1897, Academia Română îl elibera de această sarcină. Tomul al patrulea nu a mai apărut. Doar introducerea lui, de vaste dimensiuni, a fost cuprinsă între coperţi, precum o carte.
