This paper analyzes the practical form that employment contracts take in terms of their incomplete and multilayered nature. It argues that the content of the contract is highly dependent upon the contextual power relationships. These are then analyzed in terms of the substantial changes that are occurring in the structure and conduct of collective bargaining and its economic and legal context. It is argued that the consequence is a greatly increasing variety of forms of collectivism in the management of the employment contract. Copyright 1995 by Scottish Economic Society.
