Various methods of measuring real wage flexibility are discussed. Movements o f real wages of thirty-one firm-specific occupations in the period 19 79-85 are examined, and each measurement shows that some real wage fl exibility occurred during the period. However, the data suggest that collective bargaining attitudes and practices make it extremely diffi cult to negotiate regular negative real wage settlements even when un employment is rising. Nevertheless a third of the groups were worse o ff in 1984 than in 1979. Copyright 1987 by Blackwell Publishing Ltd
