Elisabeth von der Weid (Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa, Rio de Janeiro)
Abstract
The article begins by analysing the life conditions in Rio de Janeiro and the main rules of the urban reform implemented by the Federal Government and by the mayor, Pereira Passos, at the beginning of the 20th century. Next, it examines the arrival of The Rio de Janeiro Tramway Light & Power Co. Ltd. during a climax of urban works. This combination of events trade it easier for the Company to install the underground electrical cables, modify the gauges and the path of the tramway lines, and to change completely the German telephonic system into the American one. The analysis stresses the rapidity and objectivity of the company's action and its effects on the urban expansion as well as on the capital's everyday life.
